Boeing 747 on the Street in Pattaya – The Story of the Aircraft at Runway Street Food

Boeing 747 on the Street in Pattaya

This aircraft is older than most of you, my friends. The Boeing 747-217B began its journey in the mid-1970s — when most of us weren’t even born yet. Today, it’s around 50 years old and still impresses with its story, having become a real attraction in Pattaya. But let’s go through it step by step.

First Flights: Canada

Originally, this Boeing flew under the flag of Canadian airline CP Air (Canadian Pacific Airlines). Back then, it was a mighty long-haul aircraft. Passengers boarded with a sense of excitement, flight attendants served hot meals, and the captain welcomed everyone on board. It was a true golden age of aviation.

New Chapter: Pakistan

About ten years later, CP Air ceased to exist, and the aircraft moved to a completely different part of the world — Pakistan. In 1985, it joined the fleet of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Imagine the contrast: from Canadian cold to Eastern colors, new passengers, new sounds, different airports.

Then Came Africa

The story didn’t end there. In 2006, the aircraft changed hands again and moved to Africa — Sierra Leone, to be exact. It became part of the Orange Air fleet. Once again, a new climate, culture, and environment. This jet was like a true wanderer — always on the move.

Final Missions: Asia and Thailand

In 2007, the aircraft took off for another continent — Asia. It joined the Thai airline Orient Thai Airlines. After about seven years in operation, in 2014, it was finally retired from active service.

Peaceful Retirement on the Ground

But it didn’t end up scrapped. Instead, the Boeing 747 was brought to Pattaya and became the centerpiece of Runway Street Food — an outdoor food market. The name speaks for itself: “Runway” as in an airstrip. Most likely, it was transported in parts and reassembled on-site — though that’s not confirmed.

When it first arrived, the area was empty. Over time, the surroundings were built around it. Today, this aircraft is not just a landmark — it’s the heart of the Runway Street Food market and one of Pattaya’s unofficial attractions.

A True Aviation Retiree

Decades in the sky, multiple continents, cultures, and airlines — and now a place of honor. Tourists and locals alike stop by to take pictures, admire its size, and reflect on its journey. This plane didn’t end up in a scrapyard — it found a peaceful “retirement” under the Thai sun, like a veteran resting after years of service.

By the way, the exact model of this aircraft is Boeing 747-217B. Want to dive deeper into its history? Here are some reliable sources:
