Photos and Videos of the Village of Lefkara in Cyprus

I haven’t seen a more beautiful village in the couple of years I’ve lived here, and most likely — I won’t see one. Lefkara is top-notch, best of the best. Omodos, Platres,
Kakopetria, Kalopanayiotis, Vouni and a few others — they
are beautiful. But Lefkara is the TOP.
They say it’s on the UNESCO World Heritage list, but I checked — I didn’t see it on the UNESCO website, only found the lace produced in this village listed as intangible heritage, but not the village itself. I’ll talk about the lace later.
People with Instagram addiction should definitely visit here. Lefkara is located in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, 40 minutes from Larnaca. Honestly — at first the village didn’t seem too impressive, but gradually it reveals its full charm 🙂

I don’t edit photos with filters, sharpness and so on, but I think — it’s easy to imagine how everything will look with some color enhancement. There are plenty of such photos online, so I post mine as is, as I like. And you?
Here… it’s ancient for sure, but signs of renovation are visible, everything is new, clean, fresh, like brand new, and I personally see that as a big plus. From a practical point of view. Not just to come here, admire the ruins turned historical landmarks, post it all to social media, feel nostalgic about the past and all that — but also to actually live normally in this very village. That’s my simple opinion. In this regard, the government of Cyprus deserves praise, they’ve managed to preserve their villages, people still live there, not moving en masse to cities or abroad. That’s cool.

In the past, Lefkara included several villages, and now it basically consists of two — upper and lower Lefkara. The main tourist attractions are in Pano Lefkara — that is, the upper one. You can walk around it for a long time, it’s so beautiful, so many wonderful alleys and corners… In 2020 there were few tourists, but before that it used to be quite crowded.
To my surprise, I saw the South African consulate in Lefkara. I don’t know how it ended up here.

South African Consulate in Cyprus – Lefkara
By the way, about South Africa. I met two visitors from there in Cyprus, from the Republic of South Africa. One was a Cypriot, the other an Englishman. Both had extremely unusual accents, I often had to listen carefully and ask again before I could understand what they meant. I still can’t get used to the diversity of English language accents.
What to Buy in Lefkara
One of the trademarks of Lefkara, as I’ve already said, is local lace called Lefkaritika. Some call it a legend, others a historical fact, but in general, Leonardo da Vinci (yes, that one) was here. In the 15th century. And they say he was so impressed by these items that… You know his painting The Last Supper? Well, not a painting — a fresco. There’s a table in it, and you know who is sitting at that table. And on that table — a tablecloth, which is said to be made of Lefkara lace. That is, the unique pattern characteristic of Lefkaritika is visible on it. That’s the story.
In addition to the famous lace, Lefkara is known for silver. Also, Lefkara is famous for its silver products. Accordingly, there are many jewelry stores here, a wide selection — you can find a good gift. If you’re a fan of bargaining, I think they’ll meet you halfway, just like in all tourist places, though I didn’t try it myself, honestly. I have my own thoughts on this — I understand what business is, the lack of clients, idle work, no profit, and in general, what the year 2020 meant for tourism.

Various silver products and jewelry are sold in the numerous shops of the village. Surely, you’ll find something suitable — even if not for yourself, then as a gift for someone.

Actually, I first visited Lefkara, and only then started reading articles and reviews about it. It turned out that in the past, huge crowds of tourists came here, and already in the morning, the alleys were tightly packed with them, as were all the establishments. Even in 2020, it’s unusually crowded here compared to other Cypriot villages. Finding a table at a café is not easy.
