Why Are There No Sidewalks in Thailand?

This street is a good example showing that in many places in Thailand there are no sidewalks. The road is shared by vehicles – cars, motorbikes, etc. – and pedestrians, with only a conditional separation between them.

This is due to several factors. For example, the climate here is too hot for many people to walk along sidewalks (although I’m one of those who actually enjoys walking in any weather). Also, people here usually prefer riding to walking.

And while it’s not always comfortable, when moving here you’ll have to get used to it, because that’s how it is on many roads. You won’t always find separate curbs, sidewalks, and so on.

And yes, I’ll say it again – this is one of those little things, minor drawbacks that can be irritating when you first arrive in Thailand. However, over time you get used to it, stop noticing it, and become part of this lively Asian street traffic.
